About Ian
Ian Alexander is the oldest of three and has lived in North Minneapolis since 2007. His father, a high school language teacher, was from the Caribbean and his mother, an elementary art teacher, hailed from Idaho. Ian earned his undergraduate degree in political science from The Catholic University of America, in Washington DC.
Working as a strategic consultant, he moved to Minnesota to pursue a master’s degree at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School. Ian recognized the strength and resilience of the Northside, and moved into the Folwell Neighborhood at 36th & Emerson Avenue’s North shortly after his graduation.
Ian’s work in the community began in November 2009 when he established a small private-practice law firm to serve residents’ needs in the areas of family law, traffic disputes, and estate planning. Ian also serves as a Contractor with the Complaint Investigation Unit of the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights.

Life in Minneapolis
Ian worked with his neighbors to remove two problem properties from his block, which led to collaborative efforts with the city to condemn the homes of nonresponsive landlords.
Following this, Ian became an active board member of the Folwell Neighborhood Association. He also became active with the Sexual Violence Center, a non-profit that works with community systems such as hospitals, law enforcement agencies, courts, schools, and other social services organizations to assist assault victims and prevent sexual violence.
On May 22, 2011 a tornado ripped through North Minneapolis. Ian’s home was completely destroyed. The roof and attic were completely ripped off the house. However, while Ian's home was lost, his committment to the neighborhood was left intact.

Looking to the Future
When the dust settled, Ian found he remained irresistibly drawn to the resilience, compassion, and community of his neighbors.
Ian recently purchased his "forever home," a foreclosed property across from North High School, and began the long process of restoring the once-grand house.
